A short history of Lorem Ipsum
The text is not random gibberish — it is corrupted Latin. In the 1500s an unknown printer scrambled passages from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC) to create a type specimen book. The resulting fragments preserved the average word length and letter distribution of Latin prose, which made them ideal for previewing typefaces without readers being distracted by the meaning of the text.
The standard “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua…” passage has been the industry standard since the 1960s, when Letraset transferred it onto dry-transfer sheets used in publishing. Placeholder text is great for testing visual structure but it can mask real product problems. Once your layout is stable, replace Lorem Ipsum with realistic content as early as possible. Real copy has different word lengths, punctuation rhythm and information density — and a hero headline that looked perfect in Latin may become awkward or get truncated once you swap in the actual marketing message. A reasonable rule: stop using Lorem Ipsum the moment you start showing the design to non-designers.
